What Now? May 2019

by Pastor Barry Yates

Friends

Have you ever thought about what the first century followers went through after Jesus ascended to heaven after spending 40 days with them? “What do we do next?”, must have been the question they were asking each other. Jesus commanded them to go tell the world.

There are many people who say they want to follow Jesus. And that is good. But that commitment will be challenged. We must decide to follow Jesus-not because our best friend is, not because our boyfriend or girlfriend is, not because our parents are, but because we have chosen in our own heart of hearts to follow Christ.

Following Jesus means striving to be like Him. He always obeyed His Father, so that is what we strive to do (John 8:29; 15:10 NIV). To truly follow Christ means to make Him the Boss. That is what it means to make Jesus Lord of our lives (Romans 10:9; 1 Corinthians 12:3; 2 Corinthians 4:5 NIV). Every decision and dream is filtered through His Word with the goal of glorifying Him in everything (1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV). We are not saved by the things we do for Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9 NIV) but by what He has done for us. Because of His grace, we want to please Him in everything. All this is accomplished as we allow the Holy Spirit to have complete control of every area of our lives (Ephesians 5:18 NIV). He explains the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV), empowers us with spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4-11 NIV), comforts us (John 14:16 NIV), and guides us (John 14:26 NIV). To follow Christ means we apply the truths we learn from His Word and live as if Jesus walking beside us in person.
