In America, most of us do not know much about hunger and thirst. Being hungry is a Big Mac attack. Being thirsty is Miller Time. Mother Teresa says that in India they are starving physically, but in America, they are starving emotionally. We all have a spiritual hunger inside of us, but we just do not call it that. We use phrases like "My life is empty,” "I'm bored,” "I'm restless,” "Something seems to be missing in my life,” and "There must be more to life than this.” Even when things are going well, when there seems to be success in life, there is this gnawing feeling on the inside -- something is missing!
We find satisfaction in life when we uncover our true purpose in being here. If we pursue our own ideas of what will satisfy us, we never quite find it. Like a child chasing soap bubbles, we are convinced that, if we could only get our hands around that beautiful dream, we would be forever content. And then we catch it. And it is gone. But look, there is another bubble! So, we go wasting our lives chasing soap bubble dreams of happiness while our Creator waits with the instruction manual in His hands.
Life will not always go the way we want. And if I am honest with myself, even when life does go how I want, I still get discontent and want more. That means that if we do not have a satisfying RELATIONSHIP with God, no amount of circumstantial change will bring the relief we are looking for. Only Jesus can do that. Make Every Day Count!
