SUCCESS is defined as the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted, and it is usually understood that the achievement is something good. For example, most people would not consider a bank robber who eludes capture a success. Some synonyms for success are happy outcome, triumph, and fulfillment; and some antonyms are failure, disaster, downfall, and collapse. The word “key” as used in our title is defined as a vital, crucial element. People speak of success in marriage, family, education, career, business, finances, sports, and something personal. Sometimes success is measurable; for example, one might be considered a success in education upon earning a doctor’s degree. At other times success cannot be measured but is subjective.
Should Christians be pursuing success? The answer is an emphatic “yes” if we understand that a successful life is one that is intent on knowing God as He has revealed Himself, seeks to believe and obey all that the Word of God proclaims, and views life through the lens of eternity. But there is a negative side to it. When I read that I have two emotions: one is that I want to feel relieved for the guy and say, "Congratulations, Nehemiah, you made it! You have finished! You did what you came to do! Relax! Take it easy now!" Another emotion causes the question, "Now what are you going to do? You did the project of a lifetime in only 52 days, and your book is only half over. You have accomplished it by chapter 6 - now what are you going to do?" The task is not finished. Success tends to ruin a lot of people. We become unsatisfied and complacent, let down our guard, and get comfortable. As a result, we lose all the momentum we had built up for this big, big project. I have seen this happen with a lot of churches building buildings. The moment the building is erected, the people feel relieved, "We have arrived! We are in the Promised Land!" But we fail to keep on growing. We lose our progress. You can lose what you have gained if you do not watch out! Make Every Day Count!
