My Number One Goal in Life Is...

I want to invite you to join me in a message called “Life is about learning to love.” I want to begin by asking you a question. How would you complete this sentence?
My number one goal in life is __________________.
Think about that for a minute. Your number one goal in life, what is most important to you, is how you complete that sentence. What word or phrase would you use?

Would you say your number one goal in life is to be happy? Or your number one goal in life is to love? Or maybe your number one goal in life is to succeed in your career? Maybe your number one goal in life is comfort, to have fun, retire, or get married and raise a family. Or to be well known, and popular. Do any of those fit?

So, again, how would you answer the question of your number one life goal?

It is especially important. If you have never thought it through, you need to think it through, and consciously understand it because however you answer that question is what I call your Dominant Life Principle.

Everybody has a Dominant Life Principle. It is the most important value in your life. You may have never thought it through, but you use it all the time. Every time you make a decision and every time you have a choice, you access the database in your brain, and you decide what you are going to do based on your dominant life value, your dominant principle of life.

What does the Bible say about this question?

In 1 Corinthians 14:1, God tells us the correct dominant life value: “Let love be your greatest aim.” Why? Because God is love, and he created you as an act of love. One day a man asked Jesus, “What is the greatest commandment?” Jesus answered, “To love God, and to love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31 NCV). If we get that, we understand what God wants from us. Our world today does not understand love. So often, love is seen as an uncontrollable event, like something you “fall” into. But love is a choice, and when you know God, He helps you make that choice. Love is the reason you are here on this planet. Life is a school of love.
