We all have ideas about heaven. Some come from Scripture, while others come from movies, songs, traditions, or things we’ve simply heard over the years. But what does the Bible actually say about heaven?Five promises God makes about heaven—and why those promises give us more than something to look forward to. They give us a reason to trust Him today. This past Sunday we started a new series called “Trusting God’s Promises.” We learned about the promise of giving. God wants us to be generous to others and to Christ through our money, gifts, time, and talents.
This week we are looking at the promise of heaven. There are over one thousand verses in the Bible that talk about it. There is heaven, and we can look forward to it! We often consider heaven only when someone is dying. But the kingdom of heaven is meant to be not only a promised future but also motivation and refreshment to inspire us now. Singing hymns about heaven is one way to meditate on all God has promised and all we gain by persevering in Christ. Many people picture heaven as a never-ending church service in the sky. Or they think we will all become angels who float around on clouds playing harps for the rest of time. Neither of these makes eternity seem very appealing. And both are completely inaccurate according to the Bible. In fact, heaven will be glorious and full of grandeur. We will experience fullness of joy as we live in the presence of God and fellowship with each other. I love what Dr. Billy Graham said about heaven, “Heaven will be a place in which its inhabitants will be freed from the fears and insecurities that plague and haunt us in the present life. No energy crisis there … Free from the economic and financial pressures that burden us down here. Free from the fear of personal and physical harm … No fear of personal failure … Our relationship with Him will be intimate and direct. I am looking forward to that glorious day of going to heaven.” There are so many reasons to look forward to heaven. This week we are going to look at the five promises that God made to us about heaven. You do not want to miss this message. So, get up and come to Carolinas Cornerstone and jump in with us as we learn the promises of God. Make Every Day Count!
