God made each of us for a unique role in life that He intended us to fill, and He prepared each of us in advance for that role. He made no one else like us, giving us the gifts and capabilities to do what He planned for us. But our talents are to benefit others, not ourselves – we cannot serve God unless we serve other people. It is the donation, not the duration, of our life that is important. To know why we are here, we need to look in God’s instruction manual: the Bible. There we find examples Jesus provided for us about how to serve. How do you serve God? There is only one way. By serving other people. You cannot serve God directly. You can only serve God by serving others.
But God says, "My definition is very different." God says none of those things last. You are not going to remember them. God says what is going to last is service. God says the secret of a great life is you are never going to be great until you learn to serve. God did not put you on earth to live a selfish life. God did not put you on earth just to take up space, to breathe, have fun, and die. God put you here to make the world a better place. God has a contribution He wants you to make with your life. He wants you to practice serving Him. Remember life is practice for eternity. When you get to heaven, one of the things you are going to do there is serve God, and God wants you to get some practice here on earth. The more you serve, the greater you are. I could not help but think of Mother Teresa as we thought about this message. If I were to ask you, "What two words best define the Christian life?" Summarizing all of Christianity in two words, I would pick the words "give" and "serve.” That is what Jesus did. Make Every Day Count!
