One of the first things Jesus did when He began His ministry was to select and train disciples. Discipleship has been one of the key elements of Christianity ever since. Matthew’s gospel reflects the way Jesus came to him and said, “Come, be my disciple.” Upon hearing Jesus, Matthew left what he was doing and followed Jesus. The word disciple means learner, student, follower, and apprentice. Jesus chose people as His disciples so He could teach them a new way of living, teach them the truth, and bring the Good News to everyone. The disciples did not just sit back and listen to Jesus. They actively followed him, conducting his teachings as they learned from him.
Today, Jesus Christ makes this exact same offer to you: to be his disciple. He is asking you this in 2024: be my disciple. What is a “disciple?” It means a student. It means a learner. It means a pupil. A disciple is an apprentice. When a mentor takes on somebody to train, they become their “disciple.” We are to follow Jesus by demonstrating our faith through continual and fruitful spiritual growth. This week’s message presents six ways the Gospel outlines to experience spiritual growth and become more like Jesus Christ. Make Every Day Count!
